DESCRIPTION OF DIVE SITES
We have the luxury of a dozen sites all within a 2 to 5 minute boat ride from
the dock side. Our deep sites usually offer us a dramatic topography
of sloping or vertical walls. The top of these walls range from 30 to 60 feet
deep, depending on the site, and drop off to 150 feet and deeper. Reef
life ranging from baracuda, spotted eagle rays, southern stingrays, turtles
and many other colorful forms of fish life can be seen on these and other
shallow sites. A multitude of sponge life in varying shapes, sizes and colors
are everywhere, and huge soft corals including gorgorian fans abound.
One of our two most popular sites is called the Canyon. Aptly named due to
the dramatic effect of two vertical walls facing off to form a canyon of
about 50 feet wide with the top starting at 30 feet and bottoming out at the
deepest part at 150 feet. A large school of Bermuda Chub have lived here for
years. Turtles frequent this site also. The second of our most popular sites
is our plane and ship wreck sites. The ship is a 150 foot day cruiser sunk in
a 50 foot site over 9 years ago. It is often home to nurse sharks and large
green morays. Very close by, at 70 feet, lie three planes which have acquired
a host of fish life and invertebraes since they were sunk over two and a half
years ago. Other sites named after their special features are Ricky's Island/Reef,
Three Stone Ledge and Spanish Anchor.
Our shallow sites, which can be appreciated by both Novice and Certified Divers,
range from 20 feet to 40 feet depending on the site. Gilbert Reef,
named after the hurricane that created it in 1988, displays caverns that lie
under a shallow reef that can also be viewed by snorkelers. Schools of
sweepers and many varieties of colorful fish life abound in and around these
caverns. On the Nursery, named after it's reputation as a breeding ground for
many species of colorful fish, you can also find a riot of sponges and soft
corals. There is an adjoining sand bed which lies at 30 feet with the reef rising
gently to 20 and 25 feet. Following where reef meets sand bed you can drift
off to another site called Silver Spray which has a similar
charm to the Nursery. Public Beach flat is a forest of soft corals, some standing
as tall as 10 feet from the reef bed. Turtles have been known to
feed in this area and can often be seen when visiting this site. Some of the
deeper sites, like the Canyon, can be experienced by Novices as the top
of the wall is 30 feet. This is usually quite a thrill for the Novice diver.
